Generally called the wind power generated by the exploitation of wind pneontos. This action was described as “mild form of energy” and is included in “clean” sources such as used to be called the energy sources that do not emit or cause pollution.
The oldest form of exploitation of wind energy was the sails (sails), the first sailing ships and later the windmills in wind xira.Onomazetai because in Greek mythology, Aeolus was the god of the wind.
Wind power is currently an attractive solution to the problem of power. The “fuel” is abundant, decentralized and free. It emitted greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and environmental impacts are small compared with the power plants of conventional fuels. Also, the benefits of an area from the development of wind industry is remarkable.
Today’s technology is based on a horizontal axis wind 2 or 3 blades in electric power output of 200 – 400kW. When detected a windy area – and if indeed preceded the necessary measurements and studies – to harness the wind’s force placed a few dozen wind turbines, which make up a “wind farm”.
The installation of each turbine takes 1-3 days. Originally the tower was raised and positioned partially on the foundations. After the spindle is raised atop the tower. At the base of the tower is assembled the rotor or cursor (horizontal axis on which the blades are attached), which is the mobile part of the turbine. The fuselage includes a system for converting mechanical energy into electricity. Then the rotor is raised and connected to the fuselage. Finally, there are the necessary electrical connections.
Disadvantages
Wind turbines can cause injury or killing of birds, mostly migratory because endemic “tend” the presence of machinery and avoid them. So better not constructed wind farms in bird migration routes. In any case, before the creation of a wind farm or any renewable energy facility must have prior Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). However, the accident rates of birds in wind farms is much less than that of accidents involving cars. But the evolution of technology and stringent selection of the site (eg floating platforms at sea) the above problem, but the noise from the operation of machinery, have almost solved.
The situation in Greece
Greece is a country with a long coastline and vast number of islands. Therefore, strong winds blowing mainly in island and coastal areas to pay particular attention to the development of wind energy in the country. The exploitable wind potential is estimated to represent 13.6% of the total electrical needs of the country.
Actions for the development of wind energy have been across the country, and this fact has contributed to the policy of the European Union for Renewable Energies, which encourages and subsidizes investments in Renewable energy. But nationwide, the new development law 3299/04, in conjunction with the Law of Renewable Energy 3468/06 provides powerful incentives for even small-scale investments.
The Region of Western Greece, although it is less windy than other areas, has a strong power grid, and this combined with the existence windy ‘islands’ (hills, hills, etc. are exploitable wind potential) make interesting the development of wind farms.
Wind farms are present in many islands, like the wind park ‘Manolates – Xerolimpa “of the DD Dilinata Argostoli in Kefalonia. On the same island have already created two more wind farms: The wind farm “Bible Strong” Pilareon the City, and the wind farm “Imerovigli” within the administrative boundaries of municipalities Argostoli Pilareon. With the operation of three wind farms, the island supplies the country’s electricity grid with a total of 75,6 MW power. In addition, the authorization process are still five points. It should be noted that the needs of the island’s electricity in peak season (August) amounted to 50MW. The correlation between the power delivered Kefalonia network and power it consumes is extremely encouraging for the deployment of wind energy and many other islands of the territory.
